Many Options

Clayton residents can enjoy culture, dining, and entertainment at many locations in Smyrna, Dover, Newark, and Wilmington, Delaware.
Delaware’s Resort Beaches lie only an hour south of Clayton. The Eastern Shore of Maryland and destinations in Annapolis and Washington, D.C. are between a one (1) to two (2) hour drive away. Wilmington offers Amtrak service to New York City and other destinations.

Performing Arts

The newly restored Smyrna Opera House offers a year around schedule of varied musical and cultural events. The Schwartz Center for the Arts likewise provides a variety of shows for every performing arts interest. The Children’s Theatre of Dover and Kent County  practices at Wesley College and often performs at The Schwartz Center.

Additional performing arts productions can be found in Milford, Delaware, at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Maryland, the University of Delaware in Newark, and the DuPont Theatre and the Grand Opera House in Wilmington.

History & Culture

In Smyrna, you can find the home of the Duck Creek Historical Society at the Barracks on Main Street. Artifacts from Smyrna and Clayton are on display and your hosts are always helpful.

Your trip to Dover area museums should begin at the Delaware State Visitor Center located at 406 Federal Street. You’ll find the Biggs Museum of Art and directions to the old State House on the Green.

Visit the State of Delaware Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs website for more information.

Military History

On Dover Air force Base, you’ll find the Air Mobility Command Museum. On the north side of Dover, there is the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village and the Delaware State Police Museum.

Within a few minutes north of Clayton is Odessa, Delaware, which features a Christmas Walk through historic homes. Farther north is a regular ferry service to an authentic Civil War fort on an island in the middle of the Delaware River.

Historic Chestertown, Maryland, is only 30 minutes west of Clayton. Here you’ll find an annual Waterfowl Arts Festival and a re-enactment of a Revolutionary War tea party reminiscent of what happened in Boston Harbor at the same time.

Visit the Delaware Division of Parks & Recreation website for more information.
